Inside the Archive Series
Sten Shyless: The Man Who Tests Every Pattern
Before humanity could understand the Archive, someone had to prove its signals were more than noise.
The Systems Analyst
A mind that refuses coincidence
Sten Shyless does not trust a pattern simply because it is beautiful. He tries to break it first.
As a physicist, signals expert, and Archive-systems specialist, Sten studies structures that were never designed for the human mind. He can recognize relationships hidden across mathematics, metadata, and dimensions—and then spend hours trying to prove that he is wrong.
That discipline makes him essential when Darla Reign’s impossible DNA sequence begins communicating with something far older than humanity. Sten often discovers that what the Archive is hiding matters as much as what it reveals.
01 / EARLY LIFE
Born in Seattle, shaped in Denmark
Sten was born on January 20, 2016, in Seattle and raised in Aarhus, Denmark. He grew into a tall, quiet child who noticed structure before he noticed almost anything else.
He counted syllables in conversation, remembered equations after seeing them once, and found comfort in routines other people considered unnecessary. He later owned twelve nearly identical black sweaters because choosing between them seemed like a poor use of limited attention.
Sten completed high school at thirteen. His intelligence was obvious, but what separated him from other gifted students was his patience. He did not want the fastest answer. He wanted the answer that remained true after every weaker possibility had failed.
The evidence suggests that certainty should be earned, not assumed.
02 / THE FALSE SIGNAL
The pattern that failed
At sixteen, Sten detected a repeating structure inside a set of radio signals. The sequence appeared too orderly to be random, and for several hours he believed he might have found evidence of an unknown intelligence.
He tested the signal against every explanation he could imagine. The answer was not extraterrestrial or profound. A defective oscillator inside the equipment had produced the repetition.
The mistake embarrassed him, but it also defined the scientist he became. A pattern was not meaningful because it looked intentional. It had to survive every honest attempt to explain it away.
Strength and weakness
Sten’s skepticism protects the team from false conclusions, but his need to eliminate uncertainty can make him slow to act when a decision cannot wait for complete proof.
03 / THE PHYSICIST
Reading systems no human designed
Sten earned his doctorate in theoretical physics at twenty and built his career around signals, higher-dimensional geometry, quantum information, and communication systems that resisted conventional analysis.
When he joins the team studying Darla’s Sequence, Sten helps transform prime numbers and genetic structures into a twelve-dimensional lattice. What first appeared to be a biological signature becomes part of a communication system connecting humanity to the Archive.
Working alongside Marcus Hale, Sten interprets routes as relationships between places rather than simple coordinates. His analysis helps reveal that the Archive does not merely store information. It responds, chooses, and changes.

04 / THE INHERITANCE WAR
What the Archive chose not to say
Sten becomes one of the first people to understand that the Archive’s silences are deliberate. Missing metadata, restricted records, and changes that occurred before the DNA response reveal intention behind what humanity was allowed to see.
His greatest fear is not that the Archive is wrong. It is that the Archive might be logically correct—and that a flawless calculation could still lead to an unacceptable moral conclusion.
Sten’s journey forces him to confront the limit of his own gift. Logic can expose a lie, calculate a probability, and show the consequences of a choice. It cannot decide what humanity ought to become.
Why I created Sten
I wanted a character whose loyalty to evidence was absolute, but who would eventually learn that responsibility begins where calculation ends. Sten can prove that a path exists. Choosing it still requires courage.
Meet Sten Shyless
The Archive has an answer. Sten wants to know what it left out.
Follow Sten as he decodes a system older than humanity and discovers that the most dangerous information may be the part deliberately removed.
